 RUP for Practical Software and Systems Measurement (PSM) V3.0 and the PSM Standalone V3.0

Note 1: Version3.0 requires the IBM® Rational® Method Composer v7.2 (which includes the IBM Rational Unified Process®, or RUP®) and cannot be used with earlier versions of RUP. If you require use of Rational Method Composer v7.1, v7.0 or v7.0.1, you will need to download and use the RUP for PSM Plug-in v2.x.  If you require the use of v2003 of RUP, you will need to download and use the RUP Plug-in for PSM v1.0.

RUP for PSM Plug-in V3.0

Purpose:

One of the most challenging tasks in developing and maintaining software and/or systems is to meet critical project cost, schedule, and technical objectives. With more complex capabilities in today's software applications, products, and systems, effective management of development and maintenance efforts is a key factor in project success. Practical Software and Systems Measurement (PSM) was developed to help managers meeting these challenges through measurement. It describes an information-driven measurement process that will address the unique technical and business goals of your organization. The guidance in PSM represents the best practices used by measurement professionals within the software and system acquisition and engineering communities.

The RUP for Practical Software and Systems Measurement (PSM) Plug-in integrates the measurement activities, artifacts, and concepts as described by PSM, replacing the measurement concepts provided by the RUP base framework. By deploying this plug-in, your organization and projects will have more extensive measurement guidance to help you track progress in project costs, schedules, and technical objectives.

The RUP for PSM Plug-in V3.0 is an update to the V2.x. The major addition to V3.0 is systems engineering measurement content, specifically, the LAI Systems Engineering Leading Indicators Guide content. The V3.0 also references the RUP for Model-Driven Systems Development (MDSD) Plug-in V4.0. To take full advantage of the systems engineering content, we recommend you also install the RUP for MDSD Plug-in.

PSM Standalone Plug-in V3.0

Purpose:

The PSM Standalone Plug-in (or PSM Plug-in) V3.0 provides the same PSM content and guidance that is contained within the RUP for PSM Plug-in, without the dependencies to RUP or any other Rational Method Composer plug-in. It currently stands on its own.

You must first install IBM Rational Method Composer version 7.2 before you can install the PSM Standalone plug-in.

Release notes for RUP for PSM Version 3.0: This version adds systems engineering content to the plug-in – in particular, the plug-in references the RUP for Model-Driven Systems Development plug-in content and content from the Systems Engineering Leading Indicators Guide has been added. This version also has updates to the PSM content, including additional measurement specification examples, white papers and technical reports.  A new Measurement Process capability pattern based on PSM’s process model has also been added.  Please note that the plug-in content packages have been resturctured to support the new plug-in packaging in Rational Method Composer V7.2. Therefore, this plug-in is only compatible with Rational Method Composer V7.2.

Release notes for PSM Standalone Version 3.0: This is the first release of the standalone PSM plug-in.  The version number for this plug-in starts at V3.0 because the content was developed under the auspice of the RUP for PSM plug-in, which currently is at release V3.0.  Thus, the V3.0 tag is to reflect that the content in this PSM standalone plug-in reflects the content that is in the RUP for PSM plug-in, without the RUP content, of course. This plug-in is only compatible with Rational Method Composer V7.2.
